For what?

Understanding Magnetic Deviation

What is Deviation?

Magnetic deviation refers to the error introduced in magnetic compass readings due to local magnetic fields within the ship or vessel itself. Unlike magnetic variation, which is a geographic phenomenon, deviation is specific to each individual vessel and its surroundings. Why Does Deviation Occur?

Deviation arises from various sources, including:
  • Electrical Equipment:
The presence of electrical systems, wiring, and machinery can generate magnetic fields that interact with the compass.
  • Metallic Structures:
Components of the ship made from ferrous metals can distort the local magnetic field.
  • Other Magnetic Influences:
Items like speakers, electronic devices, and even magnetic fastenings on clothing can introduce deviation.
Why is it a Concern?

An uncorrected deviation can lead to inaccurate compass readings, which in turn can result in navigational errors. Given that maritime navigation relies heavily on precise compass directions, even a small error can lead to significant consequences, including the risk of collision, grounding, or sailing off-course.

Why is Magnetic Compass Adjustment Necessary?

In an age dominated by digital technology, it may seem counterintuitive to place such importance on conventional, non-digital equipment like magnetic compasses. However, Vessel Owners, Operators, Masters, Officers, Coastal Pilots, and Industry Organizations universally recognize the critical role that these traditional instruments play in safe and efficient maritime operations.

Regulatory Framework

The need to maintain magnetic deviation within acceptable limits is not just a matter of good practice; it is a legal requirement governed by international regulations. The SOLAS V/19.2.1 and IMO Res. A.382(X) mandate that all vessels, irrespective of size, must possess a properly adjusted standard magnetic compass. This equipment should function independently of any power supply and must display its reading at the main steering position. ISO 25862:2019(E) Guidelines

The ISO provides further specificity in their ISO 25862:2019(E) standard, setting the acceptable limits for residual deviation based on the gross tonnage of the vessel:

  • Vessels of 500 or more gross tonnage:
  • Vessels below 500 gross tonnage:

The ISO standard also outlines when a magnetic compass should be adjusted:

  • Every two years
  • After dry docking
  • After significant structural work
  • In several other scenarios, such as after an accident, or when new electrical or magnetic equipment is installed near the compass.
Continual Accuracy

Even after the compass has been adjusted, means to correct the magnetic heading to a true heading must always be available. This could be in the form of a residual deviation table or curve, prominently displayed and easily accessible on the ship’s bridge.
